Why is my car air con blowing hot air?

It is the first 35-degree day of the Victorian summer.
You jump in the car, start the engine, and crank the AC dial to "Max Cold."

But instead of an icy breeze, you get a blast of lukewarm air in your face.

You wait a minute. You drive down the street. It doesn't get better. You are sweating, and you are wondering if your air conditioner is broken.

The good news is that your system is probably not "broken." It likely just needs a service.

Here is why your car stops blowing cold air and what we do to fix it.

The natural loss of gas

The most common reason for hot air is simply a lack of refrigerant gas.

Many drivers assume that the gas in their AC system is sealed for life, like a refrigerator. But a car is not a fridge. It vibrates, it goes over bumps, and it has rubber hoses that expand and contract with engine heat.

Because of this, it is normal for a car AC system to lose between 10% and 15% of its gas every year through natural permeation.

If you haven't had your system serviced in four years, it might be half empty. The system still runs, but there isn't enough gas to create that "ice cold" pressure.

A blocked Cabin Air Filter

If the air coming out of your vents is cold, but the flow is very weak, the problem is often your Cabin Air Filter.

This filter sits behind your glovebox and cleans the air before it enters the cabin. Over time, it gets clogged with dust, pollen, leaves, and bugs.

When it blocks up, the fan works hard, but the air cannot get through. Replacing this $30-$50 part can instantly restore the "blast" of air to your face.

Car AC Services are more than just a gas top-up

People often ask for a "top-up" of gas. But a proper AC service is much more than that.

At Service Plus Tyre & Auto, we perform a full recovery and recharge to ensure the system is efficient and safe:

  • Recovery: We extract the old gas and weigh it to see exactly how much you have lost.
  • Vacuum Test: We put the system into a deep vacuum to remove moisture (which destroys AC pumps) and check for major leaks.
  • Oil & Dye: We add fresh compressor oil and UV dye. The dye helps us spot any future leaks.
  • Recharge: We fill the system with the precise weight of new refrigerant gas specified by the manufacturer.

The Receiver Drier

If your system has been empty for a while, moisture may have entered the lines. Moisture mixes with the gas to form an acid that eats your AC components from the inside out.

Your car has a filter called a Receiver Drier designed to trap this moisture. This is a service item. If we open your AC system for a repair, we always recommend replacing this filter to protect your expensive compressor.

Feel Cool in Summer Again

Don't suffer through another Wallan summer with the windows down.

Frequently Asked Questions

We recommend an AC service every 2 years. This keeps the gas level full and ensures the compressor oil is fresh.

That "wet sock" smell is usually bacteria or mould growing on the evaporator core behind your dashboard. We can perform an anti-bacterial treatment to kill the mould and freshen the smell.

The process usually takes about 45 minutes to an hour.

Yes, we are equipped to handle both the standard R134a gas and the newer R1234yf gas found in modern vehicles.
