Wheel Alignment vs Wheel Balancing: What is the difference?

It happens to every driver.
You are cruising down the Hume Freeway at 100km/h. The steering wheel starts to shudder in your hands. Or maybe you take your hand off the wheel for a second, and the car drifts aggressively into the next lane.

You know something is wrong. But do you ask your mechanic for a wheel alignment or a wheel balance?

These two terms are often used interchangeably. But they are completely different services. One fixes the angle of the wheels. The other fixes the weight of the wheels.

Getting the wrong one won't fix your problem.

Here is how to tell which one you need.

What is Wheel Balancing?

Wheel balancing is about weight distribution.

A tyre and wheel assembly is never perfectly uniform. There might be a slightly heavier spot in the rubber of the tyre. There might be a slight imbalance in the alloy rim.

When you spin that wheel at 100km/h, that tiny weight difference becomes a massive centrifugal force. It causes the wheel to wobble as it spins.

The Symptom:

If you need a wheel balance, you will usually feel a vibration. It often starts at a specific speed (e.g., 80km/h and above). It gets worse the faster you go. You feel it "shuddering" through the steering wheel or the seat of the car.

The Fix:

To balance a wheel, we put it on a specialized machine. This spins it and detects exactly where the heavy spot is. We then attach tiny lead weights to the opposite side of the rim to counterbalance it. This ensures the wheel spins perfectly smoothly.

What is Wheel Alignment?

Wheel alignment has nothing to do with the tyre itself. It is about the suspension.

Alignment adjusts the angles at which the wheels are set against the car and the road. Manufacturers specify precise angles to ensure the tyres make optimal contact with the road.

Hitting a pothole, a curb, or just general wear and tear can knock these angles out of spec.

  • The Symptom: If you need an alignment, the car will fight you. It might pull to the left or right when driving on a straight road. Your steering wheel might look crooked even when you are driving straight.

Most importantly, you will see uneven tyre wear. If the inside edge of your tyre is bald but the outside edge looks new, your alignment is out.
  • The Fix: We put the car on an alignment rack. We use laser sensors to measure the angles of the wheels. We then adjust the suspension components to bring the wheels back to the factory specifications.

What’s the difference?

Car shaking?

You need a Wheel Balance.

Car pulling to the side?

You need a Wheel Alignment.

Uneven tyre wear?

You need a Wheel Alignment.

Steering wheel crooked?

You need a Wheel Alignment.

Why do them together?

We often recommend doing both at the same time. This is critical when you buy new tyres.

If you put brand new tyres on a car with bad alignment, you will ruin the new rubber in a few thousand kilometres. The tyres will scrub and wear unevenly. This costs you money.

Similarly, if you align the wheels but don't balance them, the car will drive straight but still vibrate at highway speeds. This is annoying and wears out your suspension bushes.

Stop the struggle

Don't ignore the shakes or the drift. Both problems damage your tyres and increase your fuel consumption.

If your car doesn't feel planted on the road, bring it into Service Plus Tyre & Auto in Wallan. We can diagnose whether it is a balance issue, an alignment issue, or both. We will get you back to smooth driving.

Frequently Asked Questions

We recommend checking it every 10,000km or every time you get your car serviced. You should definitely get one whenever you buy new tyres or if you hit a large pothole.

Rarely. Vibration is almost always a balance issue or a bent rim. Bad alignment usually causes pulling or steering issues, not shaking.

A standard wheel alignment and balance usually takes about 45 minutes to an hour.

Yes. Even if your car is front-wheel drive, the rear wheels affect the handling. A 4-wheel alignment ensures the car tracks perfectly straight.
